Communities Against Delinquent Ownership champions a system that backs local communities to save much-loved buildings from falling into disuse and disrepair.
We crowdsource and map neglected buildings all over the country. We connect the local campaigns and organisations driving the change. And we remove barriers that get in the way of the community-led rescue of buildings people love.
Who we are
We’re Communities Against Delinquent Ownership – a network of people who are fed up seeing so many wonderful buildings stuck, empty and under-used.
Delinquent ownership is what happens when someone owns a building and will not, or cannot, bring it into use. Sometimes they’re absent. Sometimes they’re waiting for the value to rise. Sometimes they can’t afford to act. Meanwhile the roof goes, the high street thins, and a building that could have been something feeds a sense of local decline.
Communities already have more power in these situations than they realise – but a growing number of people have been taking action. We’re gathering what they’ve learned, connecting people and removing the remaining barriers.
Our roots
With our roots in the groundbreaking work of activists across the UK, saving community assets such as Hastings Pier and Manchester’s London Road Fire Station, CADO is a renewed crowdsourcing and network-building campaign led by Kinship Works and Jericho Road Solutions.
